What is Karndean Flooring?
Some rooms in the house hold require more resilient flooring than others. Hardwood floors can be very expensive so a lot of people opt for laminate flooring. Karndean flooring is a cheaper option to hardwood but also has a warmer feel and softer sound under the foot than laminate flooring. Karndean type flooring is made with 5 layers of varying material.
What materials is Karndean flooring made from?
The 5 layers of Karndean flooring are made from 4 different materials layered together to make a Karndean flooring plank.
High resolution decorative paper
The layer that gives Karndean flooring its finish, is the high-definition photographic layer. Due to being printed, there are virtually unlimited possible designs that can be printed. Allowing for a greater and more unique range of Karndean LVT flooring and cheaper than its hardwood counterparts.
PVC backing
To increase the strength and structure of the Karndean flooring there are 2 PVC backing layers. Karndean installation is much easier due to the rigidity of the planks. Karndean type flooring is known for its high quality.
PVC wear layer
Above the photographic paper layer of the Karndean type flooring, there is another layer of PVC for wear and tear. This protects the paper from being ruined over time. Everyday life has a tendency to be quite rough on household items, such as in the kitchen, so this layer helps keep the Karndean flooring looking new.
Polyurethane
As the final measure, the top layer is covered in a polyurethane coating to help prevent the Karndean flooring from being scuffed and scratched.
What different types of Karndean flooring is there?
As an aside Karndean is a brand of flooring, so there are options for Karndean Carpets as well. Although, Karndean flooring is widely known for being a cheaper alternative to hardwood floors, while remaining a luxury brand. There are also many other types of flooring Karndean offer.
Herringbone Karndean
How the Karndean fitting is accomplished, can have a dramatic effect on the end result. Karndean flooring installation for traditional Herringbone is achieved by fitting the planks at 90 degrees alongside each other.

Similar to Herringbone, Parquet Karndean flooring is the style in which the planks are placed. Parquet flooring is made with smaller wooden blocks.
Vinyl Karndean
Vinyl flooring is essentially what Karndean is, the top layer for protection may differ in some, but Karndean Floor fittings are made with Calcium Carbonate; also known as limestone.
